Join the Traveling Ewe™ and explore my home state with me with our first Qaspeq,Quiviut and Knitting™ trip!

We will meet in Alaska and start our journey in Anchorage with a little education at the Alaska Native Heritage Center and the Anchorage Museum, where we will take private tours and learn about the indigenous first people with special attention to their clothing and crafts. You will have the evening on your own to explore Anchorage.

The next morning we will head to Seward and the Kenai Fjords National Park for a wildlife cruise and lunch. In the afternoon we will travel to Kenai for the night.

The next day we will spend the day learning about and sewing our own Qaspeq, the traditional clothing of the local indigenous first people. Our teacher is a young Yupik woman who runs Sew Yupik and we will be making a modern Qaspeq.

The next day we will head to Girdwood to try our hands at gold panning at historic Crow Creek Mine. The afternoon and evening will be on your own – you can take the tram up to the top of the mountain, go for a hike, or hang out by the pond.

The next day will we head to Denali National Park with a stop in Palmer at the Musk Ox Farm.  We will learn about the work they are doing with these interesting animals and all about the quiviut fiber they produce. We will reach Denali late afternoon.

The next day we will be taking a tour of Denali National Park narrated by a trained naturalist. We again spend the night here before leaving for Anchorage in the morning. We will make a few stops along the way, before ending our day at the hotel.

On our final morning we will visit the Oomingak Cooperative for more quiviut, as well as a few local yarn shops before we head home.

The cost for this trip is $4395 and includes 7 nights hotel accommodations (double occupancy), professional transportation, lunch each day, and all entrance and tour fees. If you’d prefer a single room, the cost is an additional $1595.

A companion who does not want to take the sewing class or museum tours is welcome to join us for $3995, but must be paired with a full-fare companion. We can set them up with a fishing guide on either or both of those days if desired – cost will vary.

Roommate requests will be honored whenever possible, please just add those to the notes section at checkout. If you don’t have a roommate we are happy to set you up with one, or you can upgrade to a single room for an additional cost.

If you have special dietary, mobility, or other needs, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate you. We are happy to adapt to your physical restrictions wherever and whenever we can; but this will be a rather active trip with quite a bit of walking, sometimes on uneven ground, alternated with long periods of sitting on the bus. We are happy to work with you as much as possible to make the trip accessible for you, but please consider carefully if you have the stamina to truly enjoy this trip. If you have these or other special requests, please do let us know by selecting the appropriate item from the drop down menu when you register. We’ll then contact you directly to discuss details.

Please read our Helpful Hints & Rules page before booking your trip! Remember – your trip is non-refundable.
